Woman charged with elder abuse, took out $200,000 mortgage

The San Mateo County district attorney’s office announced that the jury trial of Jacqueline Watts, 41 of East Palo Alto has been set for July 24, 2006.

She is accused of neglecting and stealing from her grandmother, who suffers from dementia, in 2005. According to the prosecution, Watts took the 92-year-old victim to Stanford Hospital on April 27, 2005, claiming the woman had been sexually assaulted. Though doctors found no evidence of sexual assault, they did find bedsores and signs of apparent neglect. The victim was dehydrated and malnourished, according to the district attorney’s office.

Watts had allegedly obtained power of attorney for her grandmother after the victim became incompetent to make decisions, and later took out a $200,000 mortgage on the woman’s home, the district attorney’s office reported.

Watts , who remains in custody in lieu of $2.5 million bail, will appear in court on July 24 at 8:30 a.m. for the start of her jury trial.
